The AFSer's Guide to Getting There Vol. II, issue 10

We hope you are enjoying your summer! In this issue read about our suggested 'apply by' dates. We are highlighting these dates because many students ask AFS about program deadlines and we want to make the process easy for you and your parents.

Also, check out students from around the world who will be hosted across the U.S. with AFS Host Families - just click on 'Host an International Student' in the left hand column.

I'm Meghan Shruck and I am a foreign exchange student at the very end of my AFS year in Rezekne, Latvia. Sadly, I have a countdown of less than 10 days. However, I have been very fortunate to learn a new culture, make new friends, study in a new school, and become part of a new family while also passing along my own culture.

We encourage students to apply early for the broadest range of country, program and scholarship availability. In addition, students who complete the full application by the dates below will receive a discount of $250 towards their AFS tuition.

Winter 2008 - submit your full application by August 31, 2007.
Summer 2008 - submit your full application by December 31, 2007.

Summer is a great time to work on your AFS application!

Japan is where ancient gods and centuries-old customs meet cutting-edge modern life and an innovative society. From the ritual tea ceremonies and graceful gardens and shrines to the world's first high-speed train and modern skyscrapers, you'll discover your own Japan.

AFS offers high school students a summer, semester, or year abroad in Japan.

Fundraising: Get Yourself a Job!
After spending a year in the Czech Republic, an AFS Returnee named Megan gave this advice to other AFSers on the Study Abroad Bulletin Board:

"The job market here (in the U.S.) compared to most of the world is EXCELLENT. In the Czech Republic you basically can't even get a job before you graduate from high school and even then. Get a job! There are lots of jobs out there if you're willing to wash dishes, wait tables, make coffee, etc...If you aren't old enough for those jobs try bagging groceries, working a video store, scooping ice cream, or making pizzas. Still not old enough? Babysit, babysit, babysit. Or mow lawns, or walk dogs. There are lots of ways. Good luck!"

Many students have helped to pay for their AFS program by having a job.
