Travel Journal: Latvia
Vince writes about his experience as an AFSer in Latvia:

I lived in Liepaaja, the 3rd largest city in Latvija. It definitely had a "city" feel, despite the fact that it was rather small. I lived 5 minutes from the beach (very nice in the summer!), and in the other direction, 5 minutes from the town center. I could take the tram for 20 santims (40 cents) to get to most places in town.

Liepaaja is a strangely beautiful city. Most of the streets are narrow, windy, and cobble-stoned, and one of my favorite things to do was to go for a walk and get lost in all of the tall buildings and sharp corners. There are a number of beautiful and very old churches in Liepaaja. One of them had the biggest organ in all of the Baltic nations. Liepaaja has an outdoor market, which is a very fun place to experience the local culture. Old women and men sell produce they grew themselves, weighing it all out with old-fashioned scales.

Everybody I met spoke Latvian in Liepaaja, but it wasn't uncommon at all to hear people speaking in Russian on the street. There are both Latvian-language and Russian-language schools in Liepaaja.

Paraguay is alive with tradition, fusing the indigenous Guaraní Indian culture with the culture of the Spanish conquistadors. The riverside capital of Asunción, Jesuit mission ruins, and national parks are just a few of the amazing pieces of this country. Paraguayan social life revolves around the family and soccer. Paraguay is modernizing as a country, yet still retains its old-world charm—be a part of history in the making.

This summer come spend seven weeks in Paraguay, live with a host family, explore the culture—and play soccer! Though an exclusive partnership with the Paraguayan Olympic Committee, AFS Paraguay is proud to offer this program to both male and female participants. You will practice soccer techniques, hone technical skills, share in professional players’ expertise, and work with younger soccer students.
