Jessica Markham faces none of the trepidation
toward her future that some high school
seniors face. A semester in Japan took care
of that.
"I filled out an application, and had to put
whether I was messy or organized, if I smoked
or not, things like that so they could match
me up with my host family. Then I had to have
an interview and write an essay, and I got a
merit-based
scholarship for
$2,500, (see:
Awards for Excellence) and had
to come up with the rest of the money
myself," Markham said.

A high school student in Ohio named Julia is
preparing for an AFS Program to Thailand.
She writes: "To fundraise for my Thailand
trip, I've professionally recorded a CD to
sell to any supporters who want to buy it."
Julia began writing music in middle school,
while teaching herself to play guitar and
piano. Hoping to make a career in music
eventually, Julia is first planning to spend
a year in Thailand as an AFS Exchange
Student.
Consider your own talents and how you might
fold them into a creative and fun approach to
raising money for your AFS Program.
