The Hosting Experience |

Welcome to our living room where each month we
share stories and news about AFS students and
families. Imagine your own living room transformed
into an international gathering place as you open
your home to an AFS Exchange Student.
Host Family FAQs
Q: Do we decide who our new son or daughter
will be?
A: If you are interested in a particular nationality,
AFS will try to fulfill your preference and you can
indicate if you prefer to host a male or female. Our
primary aim is to find someone who will integrate
easily into your family – someone who enjoys your
family’s interests and way of life. Such a young
person could come from any part of the world, so it
helps if you are open minded about
nationality.
After you apply, we will
connect you with a local volunteer to discuss
specific students in your area.
Q: Will we be included in the local AFS
community?
A: You and your hosted student are automatically
members of the local AFS community. You are invited
to
attend their meetings, their activities and social
functions.
Q: Will we have to pay medical expenses for our
student?
A: No. Each AFS participant has secondary medical
coverage so that, in an emergency, the participant
can be treated as soon as possible. There is also a
24-hour support phone number in case of any
emergency.
Grow Your Family
A host mom in North Carolina said about her hosting
experience:
"It is hard to talk about our hosting experience
without getting teary-eyed. It brought into our family
the most wonderful young woman from Italy. We
visited her and her parents this summer and she
toured around with us for a week; it reconfirmed to
me how permanent our relationship has become. I
now think of her as my third child."

Right now, AFS Exchange Students from all over the
world are arriving in the United States. It's the
beginning of a very exciting year for host families, as
they welcome a new son or daughter.
Beginning in the fall, we'll be letting you know about
AFS Info Sessions planned for your local area.
Attending an
info or dessert night is a great way to meet the
other host families and students in your
community.
| A Wedding in the "Land of Smiles" |

Bill Sanborn and his family recently traveled to
Thailand for the wedding of his hosted daughter. He
shares here about the experience.
When we made the decision to host an exchange
student in early 1995, it wasn’t hard to decide which
organization to contact. During the summer of 1975,
prior to my senior year in high school, I had the
opportunity to be an AFS exchange student to
Argentina. Leaving the small farming community of
Montevideo, Minnesota, and living with a family in
San Francisco, Argentina, was one of the most
significant events of my life.
After searching through the dozens of profiles of
students coming to the U.S., our family decided to
host a girl named Ariya from Thailand. When I met
my “daughter” at the airport, she had a smile that lit
up her entire face. Read More...

We're providing biographies of AFS exchange
students so that you can envision what it would be
like to share your day-to-day life with a new family
member. Below are examples of students who will be
participating with AFS.
Once you begin the hosting interest form, we will
connect you with a local volunteer to discuss
specific students in your area.
Lars from Denmark
"My music is important to me," explains Lars. He has
been playing the guitar for the past year and
practices everyday in his hometown in Greenland,
where he lives with his younger brother and parents.
Opinionated and honest, Lars has a very loving and
respectful relationship with his family and they love
to go sailing together. His father is a carpenter and
his mother is a teacher. Lars is a self confident
person with a great sense of humor and a creative
mind, and says that believing in himself makes him
unique. He hopes to use these skills and his interest
in mathematics to become an engineer someday.
Kumi from Japan
Kumi is interested in cultural studies and likes learning
about Japanese culture, and she hopes to work in
international relations in the future. Like her father
(who she lives with along with her mother and
grandmother), Kumi is also interested in traditional
Japanese culture. Her father practices a form of
archery called Kyudo. Kumi performs traditional
Japanese tea ceremonies and enjoys reading novels
by Japanese authors. She is also on her school's
student council. Kumi gets along well with others and
has tons of friends because of her outgoing, fun-
loving, and social personality, as described by her
friends. Her teachers say she is "curious about
everything" and "spares no effort" to do well in
school.
