Welcome to our living room
where each month
we share stories and news about AFS Students
and Families. Imagine your own living room
transformed into an international gathering
place as you open your home to an AFS
Exchange Student.
We are Neighbors
The host parents of an AFS student from the
Czech Republic share:
"Our children have seen the world shrink so
that other countries are seen as neighbors
instead of foreign places."
Host Family FAQs
Q: Why become a host family?
A: Open your door to the world and you will
contribute actively to the promotion of
peace. You may even develop long-term bonds
and be invited to your hosted students'
wedding 10 years later! Anything is possible!
Q: What are the students' backgrounds?
A: AFS students come from more than 50
countries and from a variety of cultural and
socioeconomic backgrounds. All students are
between 15 and 18 years old, are attending
high school in the U.S., have maintained good
grades, and are seen as role models in their
home schools and communities.

AFS History
Did
you know that AFS started out as a group
of volunteer ambulance drivers?
Shortly after the outbreak of World War I, a
group of 15 Americans living in Paris
volunteered to drive ambulances for the
American Hospital there. Decades later,
their vision is changing lives.

Biographies of AFS Exchange Students
We're providing biographies of AFS Exchange
Students so that you can envision what it
would be like to share your day-to-day life
with a new family member. Below are examples
of students who will be participating with
AFS.
If you and your family are interested in
hosting an exchange student, fill out the hosting
interest form. We'll then
connect you with a local volunteer to
discuss specific students in your area.

Peter from Flemish Belgium
Peter plays indoor soccer, hitting the
playing field with his team each week. Peter
co-founded the team with the help of some of
his friends. He is also a member of a
scouting group and participates in weekly
activities. "When asking family and friends
to describe my personality," Peter recalls,
"I got a lot of different answers." His
friends and family said that he was helpful,
always there when you needed him, nice,
modest, and at times an enormous comedian. "I
have a very good relationship with both my
family and friends," Peter says. "I am the
third of four children in our family." Peter
has one older brother, one older sister, and a
younger brother.

Ceren from Turkey
Ceren is an easy-going, optimistic, and
motivated girl. She is responsible and
conscientious, though she says she can be
over-ambitious at times. Ceren's friends and
her writing are very important to her, even
though she has no desire to become a writer.
She takes her academics seriously, and so
doesn't always have a lot of free time. She
likes being with her friends when she can,
but her biggest interest is writing; she has
been doing it for a long time. Ceren also
enjoys swimming. Ceren lives with her parents
and younger brother. Her parents are very
supportive of her, and she has a good
relationship with them. Ceren has never been
overseas, and is studying German in addition
to English and her native Turkish.
