The International Living Room Vol. II, issue 7

This month AFS Exchange Students from all over the world are arriving in the United States. It's the beginning of a very exciting year for host families, as they welcome a new son or daughter. Consider getting involved as a student liaison. You'll have the chance to interact with AFS Exchange Students as a volunteer.

In this issue read a thoughtful story about one AFS student from Brazil and his first week as an Exchange Student in the U.S.

A Friend for Life

"We loved the whole experience - seeing her grow in English language skills, giving her the chance to pursue activities not available to her in Belgium -- we made a new friend for life - a way for us to broaden our world."

-AFS Host Family in Connecticut

Vinicius Caixeta (left), from Patos de Minas, Brazil, is attending school in St. Charles, MO
By Jessica Bock

Vinicius Caixeta gathered his homework from his locker at St. Charles West High School and wished he could have just one, easy conversation in Portuguese.

Everyone speaks so fast here, the 16-year-old said after his first day of high school in America. Sometimes he couldn't find the right words to express himself. His head hurt from digesting and translating in his mind the English spoken by his teachers and fellow students all day long.

Three days earlier, Vinicius had arrived at Lambert Field from his home in Patos de Minas, Brazil. As a high school student with AFS Intercultural Programs, Vinicius signed on to spend this school year living with a host family in St. Charles. He will navigate life and lessons in a foreign land, thousands of miles from familiar faces, food and phrases...
