The AFSer's Guide to Getting There
Vol. II, issue 2
All of us here at AFS could go on for hours about why studying abroad is an adventure worth taking. So, here's the big question. For you, what's so great about the idea of studying abroad? Why do you want to go? Just hit reply and drop us a quick line. If you are curious to hear how others like you answered this question, tune in to next month's issue when we will publish a collection of answers.

In this issue, hear from an AFS Returnee to Brazil and read about a variety of scholarship opportunities currently offered by AFS.

AFS Travel Journal
An AFSer named Jessica who went to Brazil shares one of her fondest memories:

"Assu was a very small and close-knit town. It had 60,000 people, but for Brazil, that was VERY small. There were no "chain" type stores and not even a movie theater, but I loved Assu. My favorite place to go was the Prassa every night with my friends. A Prassa is a square where people go to hang out and be together. We used to sing, dance, play guitar, skateboard, and do all kinds of fun things.

Right beside the prassa was a small ice cream shoppe called "Gelo Guella." The little old man who ran the shoppe was so friendly and everyday after Portuguese class my best friends and I would go to the Gela Guella for chocolate ice cream. The man got to know me so well that he noticed when my Portuguese was getting better. When I first started going I couldn't speak with him at all and before I left we would talk about the U.S. and other things. I really loved that little shoppe and the man."

Come and discover the southernmost country of the world or as Pablo Neruda (Chilean Nobel Prize Winner) once wrote, the country made for poets.” From flamingos inhabiting the world’s driest desert in northern Chile to penguin colonies making the southern Patagonia region home, the variety of Chile’s natural wonders will enchant you.
AFS programs to Chile depart as early as Mid-February 2007. Apply now for the year program to Chile -as it only departs once a year in February.

An AFSer on the summer program to Chile wrote:
"Be ready and willing to meet new friends...and their families, and just about everyone in their lives. Chileans are very open and welcoming, and if you offer to share yourself with them, they will certainly share themselves with you."

You work hard. You've been dedicating your time to community service, acting as a leader among your peers, and keeping a high grade point average the whole time—shouldn’t you be rewarded for all of this?

AFS thinks so. That’s why we will award over $200,000 in merit-based scholarships through our Awards for Excellence program this year. We’ll award 10 full-tuition scholarships and 110 partial scholarships ($1,000 and $2,500) which can be used for any AFS program departing summer ’07 or winter ’08!

AFS is celebrating Austria all year long with a total of 10 new scholarships!

Whether you depart in the winter or summer or study abroad for a semester or year, choose Austria and you may receive a scholarship. If you want an awesome experience in the crossroads of European culture—Austria’s for you!
