Host Family FAQs
Q: What kinds of families does AFS look for?
A: All kinds. It doesn't get any simpler than that. The
key requirement for a host family is a genuine desire
to host, to learn, and to enjoy the multi-cultural
experience.
Q: How is my student chosen?
A: You decide which student is right for you with
support from AFS. Experienced volunteers, many of
whom have hosted, will introduce you to students
through their applications. Volunteers will help you
select a student based upon your interests and
preferences, and upon their knowledge of students
from different backgrounds. During the review
process, AFS encourages you to express any special
concerns and identify interests you would like to
share with your student.

Teen Encourages Parents to Host Turkish Student
Last year when Erik Lundeen was a junior at Neenah
High School, he thought seriously about becoming a
foreign exchange student.
“I thought it would be fun,” he said. “Not too many
people get to do it.”
His idea was to go to Switzerland or Iceland, but
eventually his parents talked him out of going
altogether.
“They didn’t want me missing my senior year of high
school,” he said.
Instead, Lundeen persuaded them to host one of the
handful of foreign exchange students that come to
Neenah every year.
With their support, Lundeen connected with AFS, one
of the best-known nonprofit groups coordinating
intercultural learning opportunities for students
around the world. Read full article...
Biographies of AFS Exchange Students We're providing biographies of AFS Exchange
Students so that you can envision what it would be
like to share your day-to-day life with a new family
member. Below are examples of students who will be
participating with AFS.
Once you begin the hosting interest form, we will connect you
with a local volunteer to discuss specific students in
your area.
