The International Living Room Vol. II, issue 12
March is Host Family Appreciation Month. This year, nearly 3,000 families in the U.S. are sharing their home and lives with a high school student from another country through AFS. With 60 years of experience and thousands of volunteers who were also host families once, we can help you and your family have an intercultural experience that you will never forget. Now's the time to tell us more about your family so we can begin the process of matching you with an outstanding international teenager.

"Well we got a lot more than a foreign exchange student, we basically got another daughter, another member of our family. We learned so much about this person and the world she came from. Learned a lot about ourselves too.."

Norwegian Student Comes to America
by Mary Loden

For Rick and Julie DeVries having 17-year old Olav HeiberHoff, an AFS student from Norway, staying with them is just like having one of their older boys back home. And Logan, a sophomore this year, really enjoys having a big brother around.

In between watching the action on the TV screen and smacking each other with pillows from the couch Logan grinned and said, "We got along really good at home, but we have our arguments."

The guys may not see eye to eye on everything and their interests in school may take different avenues but they have enough in common to feel like home.

"They're developing a really good brother relationship," Julie said. They are already making plans for Logan to visit Olav in Norway. Read more

Biographies of AFS Exchange Students
We're including these bios so you can envision what it would be like to share your day-to-day life with a new family member.

AFS accepts host families year round. If you and your family are interested in welcoming an AFS Exchange Student please fill out the hosting interest form. We'll then connect you with a local volunteer to discuss students in your area.

Max from Germany

MaxMax is an open-minded, helpful, and happy student who loves being social. For a few years Max has played clarinet with his local orchestra. He also loves solving technical problems, so he works on the technical crew for theater productions. He hopes that he can be a scientist or an engineer in the future, as he loves the natural sciences. In his free time, Max enjoys swimming, hiking with his family, and playing soccer among other things. Max is close to his family, especially his sister.

Noora-Sofia from Finland

NooraNoora is a very active person. Her family and friends describe her as kind, happy, and cheerful. Her teachers enjoy her participation in class and her inquiring mind. One of her favorite things to do is singing, but she admits that she is shy when it comes to singing in front of people. Noora also enjoys dancing, aerobic lessons, and jogging. Noora hopes that her AFS experience will expand her worldview by giving her the chance to see how people live in other countries. She's very curious about the world and is very interested in languages-she has studied Swedish, English, and Spanish.
