The International Living Room Vol. II, issue 9
During a recent address at the World Peace Forum in New York City, J. Brian Atwood, Chairperson of the AFS International Board of Trustees, gave some inspiring words on the subject of peace. "The best way to acquire (peace) is to see the world through the eyes of others...Go forward and offer your personal testimony; advocate for peace through understanding. And, if they call you an idealist, smile serenely and accept the praise. What the world needs is a good deal more idealism in the cause of peace!"

Consider opening your home to an Exchange Student as one tangible way you and your family can to contribute to peace and understanding in the world. AFS is currently interviewing families who are interested in hosting beginning January 2008.

Strong, Lasting Friendships

"We saw a quiet, timid young girl develop into a self-assured young woman who developed some strong, lasting friendships with her new American classmates. Through the use of the internet and the telephone these friendships will continue to grow over the coming years. It was an amazing process to be involved in and to observe during the year she spent with our family. We miss her a lot. We grew to love her as one of our own children."

Benefits of Hosting a Student

To Egyptian Yahia El-Kadi, snow is more amazing than the pyramids of Giza.

Last week, during a playoff soccer game, the 16-year-old foreign exchange student got his first taste of winter weather.

After pelting his teammates with snowballs, he helped the Pine-Richland Rams earn a victory over Erie Cathedral Prep.

Yahia, or Ya-Ya, as he's known around campus, also kicks extra points for the football team, is a member of numerous high school clubs, serves on the district's World Languages Committee and is dedicated to earning high marks in his honors and advanced placement courses...
