10/16/2006 - AFS Volunteer Wins 2006 Maryland Volunteer of the Year!

Richard Davis- Honored by local community as Volunteer of the Year

Congratulations to Richard Davis, 2006 Howard County, Maryland, Volunteer of the Year!

An AFS Volunteer epitomizes the best qualities of the AFS Mission, “to work toward a more just and peaceful world” by extending their time, personalities, and always present enthusiasm.

The time and effort AFS Volunteers put into their daily AFS activities never goes unnoticed and is always appreciated. However, when an organization outside of AFS acknowledges the accomplishments of an AFS Volunteer-that only further proves how exceptional the volunteers in AFS truly are.

Richard’s years of involvement with AFS have lead him to be “one of [AFS’] most enthusiastic volunteers in his capacity as Fundraising Coordinator and Volunteer Development Coordinator” said Cindy Clemens, Chapter Coordinator, AFS Howard County. He has helped raised funds for partial scholarships for U.S. students wishing to study abroad as well as money for Hosted Student Enrichment, including trips to New York City, Washington, D.C., and Delaware. Richard has also served as liaison coordinator for the chapter and during hosting seasons could be heard calling and encouraging others to share in the excitement of hosting an AFS student.

Over the years, Richard and his family have hosted numerous AFS students, teachers, and most recently the German intern assigned to the Baltimore office, and served as liaison to several others.

Aside from his myriad, year-round AFS activities, Richard has also been a key volunteer for the American Cancer Society, the Howard County General Hospital, and the National Aquarium in Baltimore.

Please join our extended AFS Family in congratulating Richard on this honor and thanking all of our AFS Volunteers for continuing to further the AFS Mission.
