6/21/2007 - Challenges and Opportunities

by Marella Al Faton, Indonesia 06-07; hosted in Hutchinson, KS

What has my year abroad meant to me? It means everything. Being a foreigner has never been easy, for me it’s a challenge and opportunity, all at once. Here in the US where there is so much diversity mixed up as a union, I’ve been through an interesting process to get involved in many communities. I don’t remember when exactly I started to get jumbled in with many different ethnicities, races or religions, it just happened and it was just a matter of time.

My host family treated me like their own family, a close relationship quickly developed among us. They love me, they didn’t want me to leave, our love has evolved and we’re looking forward to a lasting friendship. It’s crucial to have a family who supports you and is always there when you need them, and i’m glad i’ve got them!

School in the US was the most fun thing ever!! I love my school, i love my friends. Chatting during class period, having fun at lunch time, watching games, concerts, homecoming dance, prom night, graduation etc. All of these things I’d never imagined before. It seems so strange when i realized that everything’s almost over. I still want to do it over and over again.

I’ve learned more about myself and the total exchange program experience more than I ever thought i would. Adjusting to a new environment, meeting people, making new friends, taking challenging courses and being away from my family and friends has been difficult at times but also very rewarding. Taking this opportunity to study this diverse community has sparked a greater motivation within me to learn and find new experiences.

And last but not least, i want to say thanks so much to the YES program, including all of the foundation and people who have helped me from the very beginning and throughout this whole year. Now i’m absolutely ready for the new challenges. Thank you!!!
