9/4/2007 - Dawsonville Family Welcomes Exchange Student from Iceland

This year Scott and Shirley Wadsworth of Dawsonville, GA will be hosting their third exchange student and second AFS student. Last year they hosted AFS student Christopher D’agostino from Italy. For the last two weeks, they have welcomed Iris Gunnarsdottir from Iceland who will be living with the Wadsworth for the year. Iris is 16 years old and comes from Borgarnes, Iceland.

For 60 years, AFS has been matching host families with high school students from all over the world. Host families welcome exchange students into their home and lives, provide a bed and meals, and the same guidance, love, and support as they would to their own children. AFS Volunteers based in communities around the country arrange for students to attend local high schools and provide guidance and support throughout the hosting experience. Host families participate in orientations in preparation for the arrival of their students, and a liaison supports the family, student, and school to ensure that all will gain the most from the experience.

The students arrived this August, live with a family while attending the local high school, and return home in late June or early July. This past year our students came from more than 40 different countries and brought a wealth of curiosity—and smiles—with them.

We know family life makes all the difference for a young visitor. When the Wadsworths open their home and heart to a child from another country, they introduce the world to their children and family and give their AFS student the opportunity to take back a piece of America.
