1/1/2007 - DEADLINE: January 17 for the 7th Annual Alliance Advocacy Day

ADVOCACY DAY IS FEBRUARY 21-22, 2007

Plans are currently underway for the seventh annual Alliance Advocacy Day to raise the political profile of intercultural exchange, international education, and training programs on Capitol Hill. In 2007, the Alliance will again host Advocacy Day jointly with the Association of International Education Administration (AIEA), an Alliance member representing the chief international officers on campuses throughout the United States. The event will be held in conjunction with AIEA’s annual conference.

This year AFS-USA will sponsor 6 volunteers who will represent the organization at this event. Participants must be registered volunteers and be willing to share their experience with others in the organization through written communication. Unfortunately, in this tight budget year only attendance fees for the event can be covered by AFS-USA with all other incurred costs to be paid for by the participant.

We strongly encourage every AFS Volunteer who wishes to attend this event to apply and be a participant in Advocacy Day. We urge you to stimulate grassroots participation to the extent possible because you provide the most compelling testimony about the value of exchange in our communities. When it comes to talking with a Member of Congress, no one beats a constituent!

For more information, please contact Nancy Frazier, Manager of Volunteer Services at nfrazier@afs.org.

Note: The Alliance will follow its usual practice of invoicing member organizations after the event. Early estimates indicate that participants will be billed approximately $100 per person.

Hotel Information

Alliance participants can take advantage of the AIEA Marriott Metro Center Hotel conference rate of $159 + tax/night by mentioning the “AIEA Annual Conference Meeting.” The hotel is located at 775 12th Street, N.W., Washington, DC – at the Metro Center metro station (red, orange and blue lines). To take advantage of this discount rate, you must make your hotel reservation by January 17, 2007 by calling (202) 737-2200.

Meeting Information

To the maximum extent possible, we will try to match you with congressional offices where you have a constituent interest or district connection. We will provide talking points on federal appropriations issues, visas, public diplomacy, and related matters. We hope to impress upon Members of Congress the value of our programs to communities, schools, and institutions of higher education, and the contribution these programs make to our national interest.
