12/9/2007 - Pacific Cascades Visiting Teacher from Thailand takes part in on-line video Conference

Siriporn Payoongkhunjohn, a Visiting Teacher from Thailand being hosted in the Pacific Cascades Area Team, recently had the honor of taking part in a professional development series facilitated by the University of Oregon. This series, in a video-conference format, is broadcast to English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers in Thailand. Ms. Payoongkhunjohn had the pleasure of viewing this series while in Thailand and is greatly honored to have the opportunity to now take part in the production as a guest presenter! Included below are some words from Ms. Payoongkhunjohn, along with a link and a summary of the program content.

This is just one example of some of the ways Visiting Teachers share their cultures while developing their own skills as professional educators. This series, titled Critical Thinking and Language Teaching, is designed for EFL in Thailand. The University of Oregon has partnered with the US Embassy in Bangkok, the Royal Thai Distance Learning Foundation and colleagues at Chulalongkorn University as well as at ThaiTESOL.

My Great Experience in America

My name is Siriporn Payoongkhunjohn (Sao), an AFS visiting teacher from Thailand. I would like to share my great experience in Dallas, Oregon, USA.

In the end of November 2007, I went to the University of Oregon to meet Dr. Leslie Opp-Beckman (she is a teacher at the University of Oregon) for broadcasts of television videoconferences to Thailand. This is a project between the Royal Thai Distance Learning Foundation, the Public Affairs Office of the US Embassy in Bangkok and the Thai Ministry of Education and University of Oregon.

I sat with Dr. Opp-Beckman for 1 hour and 30 minutes while she was teaching English and teaching methods to Thai teachers in Thailand. During this time, I was able to talk with Thai teachers! They asked me why I came here. I answered by telling them about the AFS program for teachers. Unbelievable, unbelievable.

Last year, I lived in Thailand. I watched and listened to Dr. Opp-Beckman ten times – once each month. But this year, I was sitting and talking with her. I was so excited. This is my real life in America because AFS program gives me a good chance to learn about American culture. Now I live in America for four months but have learned American culture much more than I studied in the university or read in many books.

Finally, A great big thank you to AFS, my host family and my host school. I again thank everyone involved.
