6/28/2006 - 18+ Community Service Call Schedule

“First and most important, is to be patient. You will probably encounter many frustrating and challenging situations, big and small, and it is always beneficial to stay calm and be patient. After all, you wouldn’t be doing something like this if you didn’t want to be challenged and experience new things.”
-Community Service Participant, South Africa

As a community service participant, you will undoubtedly come across situations which will require creativity, humor, and/or ingenuity. To that end, we would like to take this opportunity to invite you to attend a conference call designed especially for 18 + Community Service Participants.

Because CS participants are placed in work environments, the situations they come across during their program are unique. The conference calls are a chance to discuss likely scenarios ahead of time, and to get ideas from recent returnees about how to deal with issues such as cultural differences in relation to time, work ethic, home life, gender roles; dealing with boredom or witnessing corporal punishment and/or poverty.

Calls will be held on the following evenings. Countries represented are in parenthesis:

• Thursday, June 28, at 5:30pm PST (Thailand, Dominican Republic, Ecuador)*

Each call will feature at least two recent CS returnees from various countries. While it would be ideal for you to attend the call which features a returnee from your future host country, the calls are designed to provide you with valuable information regardless of your destination. Returnees will answer your questions, and those of other attendees. They will also have a chance to share their own stories from their AFS experiences.

To register for a call, and submit a question, please send your name, host country, and preferred date to Kelsey Kavanagh. You may attend one call. You will receive a confirmation email, with information about how to access the call via our toll free number. Any participant who submits a question will be entered in a drawing for an AFS mug or wallet (You must be present to win.)

Looking forward to hearing from you!
