AFX Winners Speak Out

“In my AFS experience, I hope to challenge myself in unfamiliar ways. The prospect of studying abroad for a year in a country I know very little about is daunting, but I know the adventure that lies ahead will enhance my life in ways I could never predict. I want to learn an esoteric language, meet new friends, see places I never knew existed, and make enduring connections across the globe. I want to bring the Midwest to the Far East and show the world—and myself—that we’re not really so different.”

Nicholas Welna, 2008 Full Scholarship Winner, year program to Thailand

“I am very excited for this summer, when I will be an AFS student in Ghana. In Ghana I will live with a host family and volunteer at an orphanage. I am very honored and grateful for the Awards for Excellence scholarship. Even more than the financial aid, just knowing that other are behind me is a big encouragement. I know that this will be a life changing experience with unimaginable learning and growth. I truly hope that I can help others both when I am abroad and when I return. I greatly appreciate AFS’s confidence and support in my program.”

Katherine Loosley, 2008 $1,000 Scholarship Winner, summer program to Ghana
