Visa Information

A visa is not required to enter and stay in your host country for the duration of your intensive program. However, you must have a United States passport signed and valid at least through February 2010.

  • If you do not have a passport, please apply for one immediately. Passports can take 4 to 6 weeks to process, so it is important you apply, or renew (if your passport is expired or about to expire) right away.
  • You may ask for passport applications at the main post office in your community, or check http://www.travel.state.gov online for more information on how to apply for, or renew, your passport.
  • You may have to request a rush/expedited service at an additional cost if you delay in applying. If you are under the age of 16, your parents/legal guardians must be present when you apply.
  • If you are not a U.S. citizen/passport-holder please contact AFS right away. Non-U.S. citizens may require additional documentation.

Please note: As of summer 2008, the U.S. State Department is issuing ”passport cards” in addition to the traditional passport booklet. You cannot use a passport card for your AFS Exchange. To travel abroad with AFS, you will need a passport in the traditional booklet format. The passport card is only valid for travel by boat or car to Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, and Bermuda. All AFS students will travel via airplane, and therefore must have a booklet-style passport.

Do not forget to bring your signed passport with you to Orientation!
